Library Promenade, Cambridge

Competition Entry

Year: 2024

As part of an open ideas competition for the Futures of the University Estate sponsored by the University of Cambridge, The Cambridge Room and Cambridge Students Union, HLME has created a proposal to create a distinctive, high quality new public realm linking Burrell’s Walk to Sidgwick Avenue.

The proposal envisages the removal of a number of existing, car dominated spaces and the creation of a 650m long landscape led promenade, linking various facilities including 12 Libraries and 6 university owned public event spaces. The proposal would not only provide benefits to the student and university community but also to the local resident population and introduces opportunities for new Sustainable Urban Drainage systems and enhanced biodiversity.

HLME’s proposal include three new principal spaces:

The Events Space - providing a focal point outside the University Library and place for a range of activities including talks, speeches, street food, markets and other community events.

West Square - providing an interface with public transport facilities at West Road and including new spaces for studying, socialising and meeting.

Sidgwick Gardens - A new garden space suitable for relaxation and contemplation.
